Practice With a Purpose
When you make a trip to the range or
practice green you should have a set of goals for that session.
Here are some tips to make your practice more productive:
1)
Whether you want to work on your backswing, grip, follow-through, or
putting stroke, the best way to increase your skill level is choose
one or two things and stick to them. If you try to fix
everything at once, you will end up fixing nothing.
2) Make sure that what you choose to
practice is the right thing. This can be very difficult, but
practicing the wrong thing is not helpful. Stick to
fundamentals and avoid fads or gimmicks. If you're unsure of
what fundamentals to practice, ask for help from your PGA
Professional.
3) Always pick a target. The
smaller the better. Slapping at 100 balls into a big field
with no preference as to where it lands will not make you a better
golfer.
4) Use practice aids to help your alignment.
Lay a club or board on the ground pointing to your target. Remember
that your feet should be lined up slightly left of the target (for a
right-hander).
5) Use many different clubs during
your session, but focus on short to mid irons and wedges. The
driver is the least used club in the bag, and this should be
reflected during your practice. The same applies to the most
used club: the putter.
6) Continue to practice during the
winter when possible. Taking the season off will put you
behind when good weather returns.
7) Finally, be realistic about your
expectations. This game can never be conquered. Nobody
hits every shot perfectly. Playing within your ability will
reduce your score, while trying to do too much will lead to a bad
day.
