Golf Tip of the Month
The left arm (for a right-handed golfer) is
a critical component of the golf swing, especially at impact.
It can tell you a lot about how the golfer is striking the ball.
For example, if the left elbow is flexed
and pointing at the target at impact, also known as a chicken
wing, usually the golfer has an outside-to-in swing path and is
trying to keep from pull-hooking the ball. In this case
the left elbow is creating an open club face to keep the ball
from going left.

The chicken wing can actually be desirable
in certain situations, like pitch shots where you need the club
face to remain open. But for full shots, it can be the
source of many other problems to follow.
The great Ben Hogan illustrates what the
left wrist and elbow should look like at impact:

The shaft and left arm form a straight line
to the left shoulder. The left wrist is facing the target.
This is a perfect impact position.
Practice getting to this position every
time you swing for more consistent and powerful golf shots.
